Find the Right Flag for Your Space

As a general rule, your flag's length should be about one-quarter to one-third of your flagpole's height. A 20 ft flagpole pairs well with a 3x5 ft flag, while a 25 ft pole suits a 4x6 ft flag. For wall-mounted poles (5-6 ft), a 3x5 ft flag is the standard residential size.

The U.S. Flag Code states the flag is customarily displayed from sunrise to sunset. If you fly it at night, it should be properly illuminated so it remains recognizable in the dark. If you can't light it, the respectful option is to lower it at sunset and raise it again at dawn.

A flag flown outdoors daily typically lasts around 90 days to a year depending on material and weather exposure. Nylon flags are lightweight and fly well in light wind; polyester flags are heavier and last longer in high-wind or coastal areas. Replace your flag when it shows fraying, fading, or holes.

Nylon is lighter, dries faster, and flies in lighter wind, making it the most common choice for home flagpoles. Polyester is heavier and more durable in sustained high winds or coastal climates, so it's often preferred for commercial or year-round outdoor use.
